Tragedy in Bubanza : a man in his seventies murdered, three suspects arrested by police

Bubanza, January 5, 2026 – A man aged over seventy years was brutally murdered in broad daylight on Sunday, January 4, 2026, in Gashanga sub-village, Kagirigiri village, in the Mitakataka zone of Bubanza district, Bujumbura province, western Burundi.
According to local sources, the victim’s lifeless body was discovered around noon inside his home by family members. The man in his seventies was reportedly murdered by unidentified individuals, a crime that has particularly shocked the local population, especially since it was committed in broad daylight, a rare occurrence in this usually peaceful area.
As part of the ongoing investigation, three people have already been arrested and detained at the Mpanda police station. Among them is one of the victim’s sons, with whom he reportedly had a past land dispute, now resolved. The two other suspects are believed to be former employees of the victim.
According to information gathered, the deceased had been living separately from his wife for some time. Police authorities are continuing their investigation to fully clarify the exact circumstances of this murder and identify the perpetrators of this crime.
The victim’s family is calling on the justice system to act swiftly and rigorously so that the perpetrator(s) of this murder, as well as any accomplices, are identified and punished according to the law. In the meantime, a climate of fear and anxiety prevails among the residents of the sub-village, who are demanding a judicial resolution to any conflict to prevent such acts from recurring.
