Mukaza (Bujumbura): upsurge in theft cases in the Mutanga-Sud neighborhood

Over the past two months, multiple theft cases have been reported in the Mutanga-Sud neighborhood in the Rohero zone, Mukaza commune of the Bujumbura commercial city. Residents accuse Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) of being behind these crimes. The municipal administrator of Mukaza indicates he is not aware of this situation. It is the Mugoboka II sector which is mostly affected, according to residents.

“Recently, bandits forced the door of a house where three young girls, students, live. They stole three Android phones and 56 thousand Burundian francs,” residents testify.

“Not far from there, four rabbits and kitchen utensils were stolen from a judicial police officer”.

Residents speak of many other cases in the Mugoboka II sector.

Imbonerakure singled out

In Mugoboka, it is Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) who are singled out. Their leader was even caught in the act, but he was immediately released.

“This is Museremu, head of the Imbonerakure here. He was caught stealing money from small traders. He set a trap for them around 4 a.m. when they went to Nyakabiga and the big market called Siyoni’s market to make purchases. He took all their money,” witnesses said.

They regret that “despite being caught in the act, he was not punished. He was just forced to hand over his Motorola device to CNDD-FDD officials.”

According to our sources, the neighborhood chief requested that a police position be created in Mugoboka II, in vain.

“As it turned out that it was Imbonerakure who were causing damage here, we thought that a police position would be a solution. The police could therefore intervene quickly when needed. The closest position is at more than three kilometers. But our neighborhood manager submitted the request, without success,” lament residents of the neighborhood.

Contacted the municipal administrator of Mukaza indicated that he was not aware of these lamentations from the population of Mugoboka II.
