The household concerned is located on Route 36. Everything that was in the house and in the enclosure was charred.
“Food, kitchen utensils, clothes, children’s notebooks, the entire harvest of beans, soybeans and corn, a vegetable garden located in the enclosure, … were burned,” says the man named Elvis, family leader.
Elvis and his wife were not home when it caught fire.
“We still thank the neighbors who intervened to save what could be saved. But, as the fire was serious, we barely saved anything. This is why we are asking for emergency aid and above all shelter,” he said.
The cause of the fire is identified as accidental. People who were preparing land to be used as a brick depot burned cut grass and suddenly the fire broke out, reaching the straw house of this family of Burundian refugees.
The Meheba camp has more than 27,000 refugees, including 3,000 Burundians.
