Bujumbura : grumbles from local sorghum beer sellers

After a press release on security from the administrator of the urban district of Muha, in the commercial capital Bujumbura, ordering sellers of local sorghum beer to no longer let their customers consume the product at the point of sale, but to tell them to do it at home, sellers of this drink find this measure unfair. They believe that it will worsen their already precarious situation.

These women indicate that this business provides a living for their families and that the measure will cause customers to disappear.

Yvonne lives in Musaga in the south of the commercial city, she has lived exclusively from the business of the said beer for almost eight years. She says that she has loyal customers who come every day to have this drink.

She does not carry out any other activity apart from this sale and says that “it is very difficult for her to serve her customers and tell them to go and get the drink at home, because they are used to consuming it on site”.

Maggy and Gertrude also do this sale in Kibenga, a neighborhood in the south of Bujumbura as well. They indicate that they have been doing this job for a long time and that they have difficulty telling their customers to go and consume the drink at home when they were used to drinking it on site. The measure is too restrictive for them.

They fear the disappearance of their customers, saying that “our situation will get worse”.

They point out that food prices are rising day by day on the market in the commercial capital and that it is very difficult to cope with the various daily expenses.

They fear the worst because they only live from this business and ask the administrator to review the measure.

Dévote Ndayisenga’s decision came after grenade attacks which have targeted certain places in Bujumbura in recent times.

Some observers believe the measure is linked to these explosions.
