The disease was declared after the analyses of the national reference laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), according to a press release from the Ministry in charge of health. Minister Baradahana who read it in her office in Bujumbura returned to its signs.

“It manifests itself through fever, headaches, sore throat, fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle pain or even a generalized skin rash. Pulmonary, ocular, digestive or cerebral complications can occur,” she explained.

Monkeypox is a highly contagious disease that can lead to death if treatment is not initiated in time.

According to the Burundian Minister in charge of health, its main modes of transmission include any form of bodily contact with an infected person, or objects that have been in contact with the disease or secretions from the infected person or animal.

Protective measures

This involves washing your hands regularly with clean water and soap or using hydroalcoholic solutions, and avoiding contact with a person showing any of the signs of the disease.

Minister Baradahana reassures Burundians.

“The Ministry of Public Health reassures the Burundian population that all measures are being taken to deal with this disease. The three cases are being treated and are progressing well. Contact cases are already listed and their follow-ups are underway,” she reassured, calling on people to seek help from the health services close to them in the event of any suspected case.

Monkeypox is an infection that affects both humans and animals.
