SOS Médias Burundi
Rumonge, June 9, 2025 — A lifeless body was discovered on Monday morning in the Swahili neighborhood, in the heart of the city of Rumonge, in southwest Burundi. The victim, Asmani, a 27-year-old fisherman, was fatally stabbed by unidentified individuals.
According to local administrative sources, Asmani was married and the father of two children. The tragedy occurred while he was in his usual neighborhood. He died immediately after receiving several stab wounds.
At this stage, the motive for this murder remains unknown. Authorities indicate that the police have opened an investigation to identify the perpetrators of this tragic act and the possible motives behind it.
This latest act of violence has once again plunged the population of Rumonge into dismay. The victim’s relatives are demanding justice, while the authorities are calling for calm pending the results of the investigation.
This murder occurs in a local context marked by persistent insecurity. Last April, two cases of serious violence were reported in Rukinga village, also in the town of Rumonge. Individuals suspected of belonging to the ruling party mutilated two people accused of theft, cutting off their hands. It should be noted that one of these individuals died as a result of his injuries. Police investigations have not led to a formal identification of the perpetrators, which continues to fuel a climate of fear and mistrust in the town.
Human rights organizations are calling on the authorities to conduct thorough investigations and combat impunity to curb the rise in crime in the region.
