Gitega, July 8, 2025 – A family tragedy has rocked the Rurengera village, in the Rwisabe zone of Bugendana district, in central Burundi. Béatrice Ndayikengurukiye, a 33-year-old mother of five children, including twins, surrendered to the Mutaho police on Monday, July 7, after admitting the murder of her husband, Fabien Basabose, aged 45.
According to testimonies gathered on the scene, the tragedy occurred on the night of Sunday, July 6. The wife allegedly struck her husband several times with a club in their home, killing him instantly. The information was confirmed by the villagel chief, Salvator Hatungimana, who cited persistent suspicions of infidelity as the motive. “The deceased had several extramarital affairs. Béatrice couldn’t take it anymore,” he confided.
After surrendering to the authorities, the accused spent the night in the Mutaho police cells. She was transferred on Tuesday, July 8, to the central prison in Gitega (the political capital).
The population of Rurengara, still in shock, is calling for a trial in flagrante delicto so that justice can be served swiftly and responsibilities clearly established.
The local administration, which confirmed the facts, regrets this act of mob justice. It reiterates that all disputes must be resolved through legal channels. “We ask the population to always resort to justice instead of taking the law into their own hands,” declared the area’s administration officials.
These local authorities call for restraint and ask citizens to always trust the justice system. “Taking justice into one’s own hands doesn’t solve anything; it destroys lives,” they remind us.
The police have opened an investigation to shed light on this tragic case.
Fabien Basabose was buried on Monday in an atmosphere of deep emotion.
