Rumonge, October 8, 2025 — The lifeless body of Evelyne Mukamariza, 20 years old, was discovered Tuesday morning in her home in Mutambara village, in Rumonge district (Burunga province in southern Burundi). The young woman was apparently decapitated, according to initial evidence gathered at the scene.
Residents describe an extremely violent murder.
The victim was found in her home in the village of Mujimwema, a town mainly inhabited by families repatriated from Tanzania. Residents, in shock, describe a scene of horror.
“She was locked in her house. When the door was forced open, her decapitated body was discovered,” said a witness contacted at the scene.
A missing husband, a couple in conflict
The police are actively searching for the victim’s husband. According to several local sources, the couple had recently moved to Mutambara from the Mudende area, in the former district of Buyengero, which became part of the district of Rumonge following the new administrative division.
Neighbors describe a couple who were often in conflict.
“They weren’t on good terms, it worried the whole neighborhood,” confided a resident on condition of anonymity.
Second similar crime in less than three months
Residents of Mutambara village denounce the recurrence of violent crimes targeting women. According to them, this is the second murder committed in similar circumstances in the same village in less than three months.
“Two young women killed, beheaded, in the same area, this can’t be a coincidence. We want justice to be done,” said a dismayed resident.
A region under tension
Fear is taking hold in Mutambara, where several residents are calling for increased security and a greater law enforcement presence in this rural area.
The judicial police say they have opened an investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive for the crime.
“For now, we cannot confirm the identity of the perpetrators or the reasons for the murder. But everything is being done to shed light on this case,” said a police source in Rumonge.
Calls for the protection of women
This latest tragedy has rekindled the debate on domestic violence and the vulnerability of women in rural areas. Local voices are calling on the authorities to strengthen prevention and protection mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies.
The Mutambara community, still in shock, now awaits justice and truth about the murder of Evelyne Mukamariza.
