Gitega, October 24, 2025 —
Two mysterious deaths were recorded on Thursday in the district and province of Gitega, in the center of the country. Residents of Zege and Kiremba villages express their dismay and demand the opening of independent investigations to shed light on these tragedies.

According to information gathered in Zege village, Nyamugari zone, the lifeless body of Nadine Irakoze, aged 24 years, was found inside her residence. According to Jacques Hakizimana, chief of Zege village, the victim lived alone. Initial findings indicate death by asphyxiation, but the exact causes remain unknown. The young woman’s body was transported to the morgue of the Gitega Regional Hospital following the investigation by the investigating Judicial Police Officer (OPJ).

On the same day, another tragedy was reported in Kiremba village, Buhinda zone, also in the district of Gitega. The body of Gratien Nzigo, 68 years old, was discovered not far from the Gashwabure trading center. According to the police, the cause of death has not yet been established, but a possibility related to excessive consumption of prohibited beverages, commonly known as Boss, is being considered. The victim was buried the same day following the police investigation.

Faced with these two deaths occurring in close proximity, the residents of Zege and Kiremba villages are demanding that full light be shed on these cases and that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
