Rumonge, September 5, 2020—A family tragedy occurred on Friday in the main town of the Kizuka zone, in the district and province of Rumonge, in southwestern Burundi. A mother is suspected of killing her child before attempting suicide.

According to local administrative and police sources present at the scene, the child’s lifeless body was found near the mother. The mother was also found seriously injured after attempting to take her own life.

Based on initial findings, the woman is suspected of having intentionally killed her child. The exact circumstances of the death and the motives for the tragedy remain to be established.

Neighbors report that shortly after the incident, the woman suffered a severe throat injury in a suicide attempt. She was found near the body of her child.

According to information gathered from relatives, the woman had been separated from her husband for over two years. She had returned to live with her parents while pregnant.

Seriously injured, she was taken to the hospital in Rumonge, where she received treatment.

The police have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy and establish any potential responsibility. Authorities have not yet released the child’s identity or announced any legal action.
