Burundi : $21 million granted by the African Development Bank to support the agricultural sector

Three provinces in north and northeast Burundi, namely Ngozi, Kirundo and Muyinga will benefit from the modern development of several marshes. The objective is to boost agricultural production to fight against food insecurity. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The project was launched last Thursday in the province of Kirundo in the north of the country. It concerns value chains in the livestock and agricultural sectors.

An amount of 21 million U.S. dollars has been granted by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to the government of Burundi.

The AfDB representative in the small East African nation said that “we support the government in its vision”.

The support project for sustainable development of agricultural and livestock value chains in Burundi (PADCAE _B) will be implemented in the provinces of Ngozi, Kirundo and Muyinga.

It will contribute to the fight against food and nutritional insecurity, to promote employment among young people, to set up resilient agriculture.

The objective is, according to the AfDB representative, to “ensure that three million people in the three beneficiary regions can have access to the means necessary to be able to produce considerably”.

The minister in charge of agriculture, Sanctus Niragira, specified that the program was initiated with the aim of “finding a solution to the issue of food insecurity in Burundi”.

Established over a period of four years, it will end in June 2026.

Planned activities include the modern development of the Nyamuswaga marshes, which touches on the provinces of Muyinga and Ngozi,
Nyamabuno which reaches Muyinga and Kirundo. The Rucikiri marshes located in Muyinga,
Ruyongwe touching on Kirundo-Ngozi and Muyinga as well as Rugamura located in Kirundo province are also concerned.

Minister Niragira asked the beneficiary population to “take ownership of these means of production for the sustainability of the project”.
