It is the police, supported by the prosecution offices of Muyinga and Kayanza (north) that seized the minerals from a certain Nestor Kurakure, nicknamed Dubai.

“We saw a lot of police officers arrive at Kurakure’s house. They searched his house and seized gold, its residues and Wolframite. The bags were well packed and had OBM (Burundian Minerals Office) labels”, say witnesses.

The said Kurakure was immediately arrested and taken by the police to the provincial police station.

According to local sources, the trader was denounced by three other men detained in Kayanza. The latter were surprised with 1500 kgs of Wolframite which they were suspected of transporting to Rwanda last weekend.

Authorities in Muyinga have not yet commented on this case. But, the governor of Kayanza, in the case of the three men apprehended in his province, spoke of illicit trade that must be eradicated at all costs.
