DRC: Congolese in process of obtaining national identity card
In order to give the Congolese population with an identity card, a memorandum of understanding was signed this Thursday, June 8, between the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), the National Identification and Population Office (ONIP) and the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
It will be a question of producing the very first national identity cards for the Congolese. The Prime Minister, present during the ceremonies, recommended that they fulfill this noble mission “to materialize the vision of the Head of State Felix Tshisekedi”. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
This memorandum of understanding aims to transfer enrollment devices, cartographic data and collection materials to ONIP and INS by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which are called upon to continue identification and census of the population, thus paving the way for the issuance of national identity cards.
This ceremony was followed by the symbolic handing over of certain materials used for voter registration to ONIP, to enable it to officially launch the population identification operation, starting with the city-province of Kinshasa as a pilot province, in the coming days.
Apart from these materials, the Electoral Commission made its temporary staff available to the National Population Identification Office to support it in carrying out this operation.
While explaining that this gesture aims to save the financial means that the government should spend in carrying out these operations, Sama Lukonde, Prime Minister, asked all the stakeholders to “redouble their efforts to achieve the objectives set”.
In the vast country of Central Africa, it is the electoral card that has been used as an identity card until now, which is why even prisoners are counted during the electoral period to prevent former prisoners from finding themselves without ID.
