Bujumbura : the mayor gives administrative officials 45 days to make the city clean

The mayor of the city of Bujumbura accuses the local administration staff of not dealing with issues related to sanitation. He gave them an ultimatum of just one and a half months to rectify the situation, otherwise they will be sanctioned and face dismissal. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

In a meeting with administrative authorities, market managers and security agents, Jimmy Hatungimana did not beat around the bush this Monday late afternoon.

“Get organized, dear zone leaders, organize yourselves as neighborhood leaders, because this risks causing you trouble.”

He stressed that the city of Bujumbura is the mirror of the country since passengers who get off the plane must pass through the city to reach the other provinces. The small East African nation’s only international airport is located in Bujumbura.

“Where are they going to go? Into the dirt when we are responsible?”, the mayor asked himself

For him, it is not normal that the heads of the different neighborhoods fail to mobilize the inhabitants of these localities so that they can clean up their plots.

He informed the managers of the companies responsible for the transport of household waste that an absence of up to two weeks is not permitted, that they are called upon to work in concert with the administrative staff at the base.

“In 45 days, anyone who has not been able to carry out the task entrusted to them will be replaced,” warned the mayor.

During the general tourism conference a week ago, the head of state mentioned that the unsanitary conditions observed in the commercial capital shame the country.

He had threatened to get involved himself in the work to make the city clean.

Évariste Ndayishimiye had insinuated that those who were supposed to ensure this, including the mayor of Bujumbura, had failed in their mission.
