Makamba : UPRONA party activities banned in Nyanza-Lac and Vugizo

On Sunday, members of the UPRONA party were refused to hold a meeting in Buheka village. It is in Nyanza-Lac district in Makamba province (southern Burundi). Three weeks ago, another meeting of the same party was banned by Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) in Vugizo district, in the same province. Party officials accuse the administration of harassment of opposition political parties on the eve of the 2025 elections. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The meeting organized by the UPRONA party was to be held in Buheka village in the Kazirabageni zone in the Nyanza-Lac district.

“As we were about to start, we saw the head of the village arrive. He informed us that we could not meet on site. However, we had respected all the administrative procedures necessary for this type of activity,” explain UPRONA party officials.

According to our sources, the village chief indicated that the administrative authorities were not informed.

Allegations rejected by UPRONA officials. These specify that “we have informed the local administration at the provincial level in writing. We even have a copy and acknowledgments of receipt.”

This Sunday’s meeting was important, especially as it saw the participation of party officials at the Makamba province level.

A not isolated case…

Three weeks ago, the same party of Rwagasore (hero of the Independence of Burundi) was unable to meet in the Vugizo district (same province). At the time of the incident, Imbonerakure destroyed the tents erected and tore down flags placed on the site.

Whether it was Sunday in Nyanza-Lac, or three weeks ago in Vugizo, the administrators did not want to react to the situation.
