The body of Esther. N was discovered on Monday morning in one of the rooms of a hotel in Uvira.
“When we wanted to prepare the rooms for new clients, we realized that the keys to a room were not given. We checked and discovered a body in the said room”, say our sources at the hotel where the tragedy took place.
After checking the client register, the victim was identified as: Esther. N, of Burundian origin.
According to our sources, she had been taken to this hotel by a man during the night. The man in question is still missing.
Other sex workers, mainly Burundian women, denounce “an insecurity that weighs on us Burundians. The police and the administration should protect us. We are legally established here. But we are really victims of several forms of harassment, even assassinations. This is the second colleague killed”.
The police say they have opened an investigation.
The city of Uvira is less than ten kilometers from the Burundian-Congolese border in western Burundi. Many Burundians go there via the Gatumba border post in Mutimbuzi commune (Bujumbura province) to practice various jobs.
