The crime took place in the town of Rumonge, not far from the provincial police station where the branch of this microfinance institution of the Burundian army is based.
According to a police source, the man, who has not been identified, was killed while trying to break down the door of a local shop.
“He died on the spot,” our source said. Witnesses said the body of the alleged thief was transferred to the provincial hospital the same night.
Residents say there has been a resurgence of banditry in households, shops and crop fields in recent days and believe that this is linked to extreme poverty, a situation aggravated by unemployment.
Rumonge Governor Leonard Niyonsaba has asked district administrators to strengthen joint security committees during the end-of-year holidays to “limit the damage”.
