A tragedy occurred on the night of February 9 to 10 in Gasenyi village, in the district of Buganda, province of Cibitoke in northwestern Burundi. Salvator Ngendakumana, a forty-year-old, was violently murdered while he was at his partner’s house.

According to witnesses, the man was attacked in the middle of the night while he was sleeping at the home of this woman, who was separated from her husband. The latter, driven by a desire for revenge, is said to have ordered the murder. He is said to have entrusted this mission to members of the CNDD-FDD party’s youth league, the Imbonerakure.

“They first knocked him out with a hammer before slitting his throat with a knife,” reports a local source, describing a scene of rare brutality.

The case quickly mobilized the justice system. The prosecutor at the Cibitoke First Instance Court announced the arrest of four suspects, identified as young activists of the ruling party who took part in the crime, as well as the alleged instigator.

Faced with the outcry caused by this case, residents are demanding exemplary sanctions. The prosecutor assures that justice will take its course and promises that perpetrators will answer for their actions as part of a flagrante delicto procedure currently being prepared.
