Bujumbura : CNEB warns of socio-economic challenges and reiterates the role of churches as Easter and elections approach

SOS Médias BurundiBujumbura, April 19, 2025 – With Easter approaching and in a tense political and economic context, the National Council of Churches of Burundi (CNEB) expresses its concern about the country’s socio-economic situation. Meeting in a regular session, eight religious leaders, members of the CNEB, recently issued a statement highlighting the growing difficulties facing Burundians : persistent fuel shortages, a lack of foreign currency, and rampant inflation.

In their message, the religious leaders emphasized that Easter is a symbolic moment for Christians, bringing hope for rebirth. They see it as an opportunity to “emerge not only from the slavery of sin but also from the precarious living conditions” faced by many Burundian families.

The CNEB calls on the authorities to “surround themselves with experts to identify sustainable solutions” to these recurring economic problems. For the Churches, it is urgent that the government address the root causes of poverty through serious projects executed with integrity.

The role of the Churches, and the Catholic Church in particular, in public affairs

The Council also emphasizes the importance of the Churches’ involvement in public affairs in Burundi. The Catholic Church, through the Burundi Bishops’ Conference, has always played a crucial role in promoting social justice, human rights, and peace. Traditionally, the Churches have been influential actors in national reconciliation and peacekeeping processes. They have also supported initiatives aimed at improving education and the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations.

Religious leaders believe that their role goes beyond the spiritual and that they have a moral responsibility in guiding public policy. In their statement, they recall that churches, particularly the Catholic Church, have always worked for transparent governance, assistance to the poor, and the fight against injustice. Through their social and educational activities, they position themselves as development actors, working hand in hand with the state and the civil society for the well-being of Burundian people.

Encourage responsible electoral participation and a peaceful process

Also addressing the population, the CNEB encourages massive participation in the upcoming elections. It emphasizes the right of every citizen to freely choose their representatives, while urging political leaders to ensure a fair, peaceful electoral process that respects the popular will. “To put an end to sin is also to act with justice,” they emphasized.

While welcoming the current security stability, the CNEB calls on Burundians to intensify their prayers for the country, particularly so that the 2025 elections are free, fair, and peaceful. The Churches hope to avoid a repeat of past electoral violence and to continue to play a key role in reconciliation and the peaceful management of national affairs.
