Cibitoke, June 14, 2025 —
While the CNDD-FDD won all the seats in the legislative elections and most seats in district elections of June 5, Burundian Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca ruled out the idea of a return to the single-party system on Friday. He called on the opposition to be patient and prepare for the upcoming elections.

Speaking during a public broadcast in Cibitoke, alongside several ministers, Mr. Ndirakobuca sought to reassure the national and international opinion. “Just because one party has won doesn’t mean we’re going to establish a one-party system,” he stated, responding to growing concerns about the state of political pluralism in Burundi.

He maintained that Burundians had freely expressed their choice at the ballot box. “The time will come when everyone will be able to put their ideas forward to the people. For now, we must let those who were elected work,” he advised the opposition parties.

In a speech intended to be both reassuring and mobilizing, the head of government urged political parties to “reconnect with the real concerns of citizens” in order to regain the trust of the electorate. “It’s clear ideas, genuine proximity to the population, and concrete proposals that allow us to win elections,” he insisted.

Gervais Ndirakobuca finally emphasized that stability and national cohesion remained top priorities for his government, while reaffirming Burundi’s commitment to a multiparty system.
