Domestic dispute in Mugina : a man stabbed by his wife

Mugina, August 24, 2025 – A domestic dispute turned tragic on Sunday in Mugina, Bujumbura province, western Burundi. A 30-year-old father of two was seriously injured with a knife by his wife, who accused him of squandering the family assets.

According to security sources, Venant Niyonsaba, 30 years old, and his wife Godelive Ndayisaba, 26 years old, had been living in a tense atmosphere for several weeks. The attack took place inside their home in Gisheka, in the Nyamakarabo zone, Mugina district.

The suspect accused her husband of wasting family property, particularly livestock. During the altercation, she stabbed him in the side. Seriously injured and losing a lot of blood, Niyonsaba was rescued by neighbors before being rushed to a medical facility.

Contained anger and response from the authorities

The news of the attack sparked outrage and anger among the victim’s relatives, some of whom threatened to take legal action. The swift intervention of law enforcement prevented violence.
“We call on the population to remain calm and allow justice to take its course,” said a local administration official.

The suspect in custody

Godelive Ndayisaba was immediately arrested and detained in the Mugina judicial police cell. She will be questioned by the courts in the coming days.

Domestic violence persists

This tragedy highlights the persistence of domestic violence in several rural areas across the country. Local authorities are calling for increased awareness of the peaceful resolution of domestic disputes.
