SOS Médias Burundi

Gitega, August 28, 2025 — The body of Emmanuel Nyandwi, aged 60 years, was found on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, inside his home in Nyamutobo village, Nyabiraba zone, Gishubi district, in Gitega province, central Burundi.

Police indicate that the exact circumstances of the death remain to be determined and that investigations are ongoing. Suicide is currently being considered, as the victim was alone at home at the time of the tragedy. No suspects have been identified.

This discovery comes just days after August 23, 2025, when the body of 69-year-old Mathias Mpfekurera was found in the Ruvyironza River, on the banks of Jurwe village, in the same district of Gishubi.

These repeated incidents are causing concern among residents. Local authorities have urged caution and assured that all necessary measures will be taken to clarify these cases and prevent similar situations from occurring again.

Several observers are now referring to Gitega province as a “graveyard province” due to the repeated discoveries of bodies in the region.
