Burunga : Mutambara counts non-residents in the face of insecurity
SOS Médias Burundi
Rumonge, October 12, 2025 – An operation to identify so-called “irregular” residents was launched on Monday in Mutambara village, located in the Gatete zone, Rumonge district, Burunga province, southern Burundi. This initiative follows a security meeting chaired by the district administrator, Augustin Minani.
Objective : strengthening security
According to the administrator, the main objective is to better control the resident population in order to combat growing insecurity in the region. He instructed local administration officials to count all residents in household registries, in order to identify people living in the village without officially residing there.
Non-residents singled out
Some voices within the population accuse non-residents, particularly inmates recently released from Murembwe Central Prison, located in the same district, of being the cause of the insecurity in the village. These individuals are perceived as suspects and responsible for several acts of violence.
A worrying toll
In the past three months, three people have been killed in the village : two women and one man. Despite the opening of investigations by the judicial authorities, no suspects have yet been arrested.
Call for action
Faced with this situation, the residents of Mutambara are urging the district administrator to do everything possible to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators of these crimes. They affirm their support for the identification initiative and demand that concrete measures be taken to guarantee their safety.
