Burundi, October 15, 2025 – The population of Rushanga village, in the district of Bugendana, Gitega province in central Burundi, is in shock after the discovery of the lifeless body of 88-year-old Véronique Mundanikure. The victim was found on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, about 20 meters from her home, according to witnesses.
Rushanga village chief Emmanuel Barajingitwa confirmed the information, stating that the elderly woman had been brutally stabbed by as yet unidentified perpetrators.
Witchcraft-related theory
The motives for the murder remain unknown at this time, but according to Barajingitwa, investigators are considering a witchcraft-related theory. Two suspects, Joachim Ngendahoruri and his son Benjamin Ndayishimiye, 23 years old, were arrested the same day and taken into custody in police cells in Bugendana for further investigation.
Two other suspects in this case reportedly fled the scene and are currently being sought by the police.
The victim’s body was buried on Tuesday, October 14, following a report by the Judicial Police Officer (OPJ) in charge of the case.
“This is a despicable act that has shocked the entire community. We hope that the matter will be brought to light quickly,” declared village Chief Emmanuel Barajingitwa.
