Burunga : another unexplained death in troubling circumstances in Nyanza

Nyanza, June 4, 2026 – A man identified as Jean Claude Ndayishimiye was found dead Wednesday night in a shop located in the Bogorwa neighborhood, Nyanza zone, Nyanza district, in Burunga province, southern Burundi.

According to initial reports gathered at the scene, the incident occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The victim, who was spending the night in the shop owned by his brother-in-law, reportedly locked himself inside before being discovered lifeless.

Local sources indicate that members of the Burundi National Police and the National Defense Force responded to the scene to gain access to the locked premises. After opening the shop, authorities confirmed the death.

A judicial police officer and a doctor went to the scene to conduct the initial investigation and begin the inquiry.

The body was transferred to the morgue at Nyanza Hospital, pending the results of the forensic examinations and the conclusions of the ongoing investigations.

At this stage, the exact circumstances of the death have not yet been officially established. Authorities are urging caution and asking people to avoid drawing any hasty conclusions before the investigations are complete.

In recent months, several deaths occurring under unusual circumstances in various localities in Burunga Province, as well as in other regions of Burundi, have fueled calls for thorough investigations to accurately determine the true causes of these deaths.

Human rights organizations are emphasizing the need for rigorous forensic investigations to avoid any confusion between suicide, accident, or foul play.

While awaiting official conclusions, the residents of Nyanza are still waiting for clarification on the circumstances of this latest death.
