Burundi : fraud, abuse, and misconduct in some schools, FENASEB raises the alarm

Bujumbura, June 13, 2026 – The National Federation of Education Sector Unions of Burundi (FENASEB) is raising the alarm about a series of concerning practices in some of the country’s schools, ranging from exam fraud to cases of abuse and administrative irregularities. In a public statement, the union calls on education authorities to strengthen discipline, punish the reported misconduct, and restore the credibility of the education system as the 2025-2026 school year draws to a close.

In a recently published statement, FENASEB’s legal representative, Antoine Manuma, believes that urgent measures must be taken to guarantee a climate of trust and credibility in the education sector.

Fraud, abuse, and irregularities reported

According to FENASEB, several cases of misconduct were observed during the first two terms in various schools across the country.

Among the reported incidents are exam fraud attributed to certain teachers for the benefit of pupils in several schools. The union also reports cases of sexual abuse in some schools, allegedly involving members of the teaching staff.

Other irregularities include the chaotic allocation of grades and the falsification of academic results on some report cards.

A worrying phenomenon

For FENASEB, these cases represent only part of a broader phenomenon. The organization asserts that such behavior is becoming increasingly common in some schools and deplores the lack of response, or even a form of tolerance, at various levels of administrative responsibility.

The union is calling on teachers not to remain passive in the face of these situations and is demanding the adoption of strict disciplinary measures to prevent these practices from becoming entrenched in the education system.

It also believes that school officials accused of failing to sanction or covering up these abuses should be held accountable for their management.

Call to restore the credibility of schools

According to Antoine Manuma, these behaviors damage the image of teachers, compromise the quality of education, and undermine the credibility of the Burundian education system.

FENASEB is therefore calling on all stakeholders in the education sector to correct the observed irregularities and strengthen discipline in schools in order to guarantee more rigorous academic supervision and restore the confidence of students and parents.
