Gitega, October 13, 2025 — The discovery of a man’s lifeless body in Mungwa village, in the district and province of Gitega, has sparked outrage. While suicide is currently the preferred theory, several residents are suggesting a possible cover-up.

A lifeless body was discovered last Saturday morning in Mungwa village, in the district and province of Gitega, in central Burundi. The victim, identified as Gabriel Sinzumunsi, was found hanging from a rope, suspended from the roof of his house.

According to a witness met on the scene, the discovery stunned the residents of Mungwa. Shabille Dushimirimana, the village chief, confirmed the information, stating that the exact circumstances of the tragedy remain unknown. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes.

The administration official, however, indicated that the suicide theory is currently being favored. The victim’s body has been transferred to the morgue of Sainte-Thérèse Hospital in Songa (Betania).

However, doubts remain among the local population. Several residents are raising the possibility of a murder disguised as suicide. According to some sources, Gabriel Sinzumunsi may have been killed before his body was returned home.
These sources also mentioned land disputes between the victim and some members of his family and called for independent investigations to shed light on the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
