DRC (Kalehe) : the Prime Minister brought support to victims of the Kalehe floods

The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sama Lukonde went this Saturday evening to the territory of Kalehe, in the province of South Kivu, after more than three weeks of floods which shook the region. More than 500 people were killed, 5 thousand others missing in this natural disaster. Accompanied by several authorities and representatives of the people, the Prime Minister visited the areas of Bushushu and Nyamukubi which were most affected by the floods that occurred on May 4 in this part of eastern Congo.

Arriving at Kalehe-Cibanda Luako airport from the city of Goma (capital of North Kivu), he was received by the governor of South Kivu province, Théo Ngwabidje. He then took a boat to Bushushu where he officially launched repair works on the second road linking Bukavu (capital of South Kivu) and Goma.

Residents, like Gad Niringiyimana who lost his mother and brothers in the May 4 disaster, thanked “the Congolese government which has just given us aid.”

Mr. Sadiki from the locality of Bushushu, affected by the disaster “appreciated the support given by the Congolese government and asked that it be distributed in full transparency.”

In addition to aid consisting of food, medicines, mattresses, oil and clothing were distributed to the population, victims of recent deadly floods.

But the victims fear they will suffer from hunger in the coming days because their crop fields have been completely destroyed.

The Prime Minister promised them that the government would find them a better place to settle in order to protect them from disasters.

According to local authorities, at least 500 people died in the Kalehe floods, 5 thousand others missing. The bodies that have not yet been found have been buried under the rubble or washed away by the waters of Lake Kivu, state services announced.
