Butanyerera : a woman found dead, tied to a tree in Muhingira

Matongo, July 25, 2025 – A week after the discovery of a man’s body in the Nyawisesera River (same region), a new tragedy has caused shock. The body of a woman was found on Friday morning, tied to a tree in Muhingira village, in Matongo district, in Butanyerera province, northern Burundi. This series of unexplained murders is deeply worrying residents.

A disturbing disappearance, a shocking discovery

According to several witnesses, the victim was last seen accompanying her child who was hospitalized at the Gatara health center. Her disappearance, reported as early as Thursday, had already caused concern in the surrounding area. The tragedy only came to light the next day, when a passerby made the gruesome discovery in the nearby Muhingira village.

Local authorities, including the police and the Gatara administration, confirmed that everything indicated a post-mortem transfer : the woman was killed elsewhere, then transported and tied to the tree during the night.

The victim’s identity and further investigation

Donatien Kubwimana, distrust councilor in charge of social affairs in Matongo, identified the deceased as being from Cukiro village, in Kayanza district. Her body was transported to the morgue at the Gakenke health center, where an autopsy is scheduled to be performed to clarify the exact circumstances of her death.

An increasingly tense security climate

This tragedy occurs in an already tense climate. Barely a week earlier, another body was recovered from the Nyawisesera River (in the same region). The victim, a man, was also found dead in suspicious circumstances in Muhanga village. Two murders in less than seven days : the local population is now plunged into fear.

Calls for unity and vigilance

Faced with this rising insecurity, the authorities are calling for mobilization. “We must strengthen the joint security committees and redouble our vigilance,” said Donatien Kubwimana. He urges the population to actively cooperate with law enforcement to prevent further tragedies.

But in a region marked by repeated gruesome discoveries, fear is growing, and the population is demanding clear answers and concrete actions to end this dark series.
