Rwanda : death of Marie Immaculée Ingabire, emblematic figure in the fight against corruption

Kigali, October 9, 2025 — Transparency International Rwanda confirmed on Thursday morning the death of its president, Marie Immaculée Ingabire, at the age of 63. A longtime activist for transparency and human rights, she passed away following an illness that had weakened her in recent months.

Born in 1962 in Burundi, where her parents lived in exile, Marie Immaculée Ingabire spent part of her childhood in the small east African nation before moving to Rwanda after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, which was ended by the current ruling party, the RPF-Inkotanyi, in July 1994.

Trained as a journalist, she began her career at ORINFOR, the Rwandan Information Office—now the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA)—before becoming fully involved in the civil society. Her career has been marked by a constant commitment to social justice, transparency in public management, and the promotion of women’s leadership.

A life dedicated to transparency and integrity

In 2004, she helped found Transparency International Rwanda, which she led for several years. Under her presidency, the organization established itself as a respected voice in the fight against corruption and for good governance.

“She embodied integrity and determination, even in the face of obstacles,” said a former colleague.

Ms. Ingabire tirelessly advocated for a Rwanda where institutions are accountable and citizens actively participate in the country’s governance. She was also recognized for her commitment to defending women’s rights and equal opportunity.

A huge loss for the civil society

Transparency International Rwanda paid tribute to an “inspiring leader” and a “courageous voice against corruption.”

Messages of condolences have poured in from several NGOs and civil society actors in Rwanda and the region. Many salute a woman of conviction who remained true to her principles to the end.

A lasting legacy

Through her work, Marie Immaculée Ingabire inspired several generations of activists, journalists, and civil servants committed to a more just Rwanda.

“She has proven that one can serve the public with honesty, without compromise,” said a member of the Rwandan civil society.

Marie Immaculée Ingabire leaves behind a huge void. Her career, which began in exile in Burundi and was dedicated to transparency in Rwanda, will remain an example of integrity and civic courage for the region.
