Bukavu : journalist Honneur David Safari missing

SOS Médias Burundi

Bukavu, December 29, 2025 — Journalist Honneur David Safari, editor-in-chief and founder of the media outlet La Prunelle RDC, has been missing since the evening of Saturday, December 28, 2025, in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to information gathered from his family and colleagues, the journalist disappeared around 6:00 PM while riding his motorcycle in the city. Shortly before his disappearance, Honneur David Safari reportedly expressed concerns about his safety.

“Our colleague told me that there were people behind him. When he was riding his motorcycle around 6:00 PM, he noticed he was being followed,” a source close to him stated.

Faced with this alarming situation, representatives of journalists in South Kivu province went to the intelligence office of the AFC/M23 movement on Monday to request their involvement in the search for their colleague.

As a reminder, the city of Bukavu fell to the M23 rebels at the beginning of the year. This armed group is affiliated with the Congo River Alliance (AFC), led by Corneille Nangaa, former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the DRC. The AFC advocates for the establishment of a federal state in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has since set up a parallel administration in the areas under its control, including Bukavu.

In an official statement, La Prunelle RDC ASBL expressed its deep concern and called on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to find Honneur David Safari safe and sound and guarantee his security.

A committed journalist, Honneur David Safari is a well-known figure in the Congolese media landscape. Founder of La Prunelle RDC, he distinguished himself through his independent journalism and his advocacy for press freedom in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
