Rumonge, February 16, 2026 – A 15-year-old girl was found dead on Sunday in the Mudende zone of Rumonge district.

This tragedy has reignited concerns about the safety and protection of minors in Burunga province, southern Burundi.

According to local sources, initial findings indicate that the victim suffered severe violence before her death. The information from the on-site medical examination suggests that she was raped and then strangled.

As of 9:00 AM on Monday, the girl’s body was still lying on the ground where it was discovered, causing widespread shock among the residents. Administrative, health, and security services went to the scene to conduct necessary investigations. Three people suspected of involvement have been arrested, according to reports.

Beyond the horror of the crime, this case brings to the forefront the urgent issue of child protection, particularly for young girls who are often exposed to various forms of violence. Local officials are calling on parents and the community to increase vigilance and supervision of minors, especially when they travel to isolated areas.

In the locality, calls are mounting for justice to take its course so that children’s rights are respected and protected in accordance with the law. For many residents, this tragedy underscores the need for collective action involving authorities, families, and the civil society to guarantee a safe environment for all children.
