Nyanza, February 19, 2026 – Three people, including a three-and-a-half-year-old girl, were brutally murdered on the night of Wednesday, February 18, to Thursday, February 19, in Mugumure village, in the Mukubano zone of Nyanza district, Burunga province, in southern Burundi. The head of the family, currently on the run, is strongly suspected of committing this triple homicide.
A tragedy of rare violence occurred in the middle of the night in Mugumure village. The victims are Onorathe Ntunzwenimana, 44 years old, the suspect’s wife, Yollande Ninteretse, 55 years old, and three-and-a-half-year-old Editha Ntakiyinanira.
According to several local sources and security officials in Nyanza district, the main suspect is Ezéchiel Nzeyimana, husband of Onorathe Ntunzwenimana and father of the deceased child.
Initial reports indicate that the crime was committed with a machete. Authorities suggest that persistent family conflicts preceded the attack. Some sources suggest it was premeditated : the suspect reportedly left the scene after the murder, taking his belongings with him.
He is actively being sought by law enforcement.
A family in shock, authorities mobilized
The victims’ relatives, deeply distraught, are demanding justice and that the alleged perpetrator of this triple murder be swiftly apprehended and brought before the appropriate courts.
The local administration, in collaboration with the police, reports that search operations are underway. Authorities are calling on the public to remain calm and cooperate to facilitate the investigation.
This tragedy has reignited concerns about the recent surge in domestic violence and serious crime in Burunga province, including the murder of a young girl after she was raped in Rumonge district. In that case, the Rumonge court sentenced three young men to life imprisonment on Wednesday.
