Burunga : a man found dying by the roadside, succumbs to his injuries in Nyanza

Burunga, July 13, 2026 — A man whose identity remains unknown died after being found severely injured by the side of the Mabanda-Mugina road, in Bikobe village, in the Gitara zone, Nyanza district, Burunga province, southern Burundi. Discovered still alive by passersby on the morning of Sunday, July 12, he succumbed to his injuries before he could receive medical attention. The circumstances of his death remain unknown.

According to several witnesses, the victim was discovered around 6:00 AM by the side of the road connecting Mabanda to Mugina. He had serious injuries suggesting he had been violently beaten. The man was bleeding profusely from the nose and had marks on his wrists, suggesting he may have been tied up before being attacked. Significant bloodstains were also visible on his face.

The first residents to arrive at the scene reported that the victim was still breathing. When asked what he wanted to drink, the man reportedly asked for beer. The locals eventually brought him milk, but he died before he could be taken to a health facility.

According to information gathered at the scene, the man had been brutally beaten elsewhere during the night of Saturday to Sunday before being abandoned in Bikobe village, where he was found a few hours later.

The body was transferred to the morgue at Rusenyi Hospital, located in the Mabanda zone of ​​Nyanza district, where it is being held pending identification and further investigation.

At the time of writing, administrative authorities and security services had not yet commented on the circumstances of this death. An investigation is expected to identify the victim, find the perpetrators of this attack, and establish the exact circumstances of this tragedy.

This latest tragedy comes amid ongoing reports of violence and suspicious deaths in several localities of Burunga province, fueling residents’ concerns about persistent insecurity and impunity.
