Nyarugusu (Tanzania): a campaign against malaria
The UNHCR in collaboration with the government of Tanzania organized an indoor spraying campaign in all houses, places that may contain standing water as well as uninhabited places close to households in the Nyarugusu refugee camp.
This will be followed by the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, according to a source within the UNHCR. According to our sources, malaria broke out in the Nyarugusu camp, as in all of Tanzania.
The country is stepping up the fight against this disease in areas at risk, including refugee camps. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
The campaign started in zones 12 and 13 which have many cases of malaria and should continue in other zones and villages of the Nyarugusu camp.
It is carried out both in the part of Burundians and in the part occupied by the Congolese.
This happens at a time when hospital beds are overwhelmed at Nyarugusu camp. The UNHCR with its partners want to limit the damage.
“The most affected are children under five years of age, pregnant women and the elderly. We have already recorded deaths. And therefore, we must act in time to avoid harmful consequences”, said a UNHCR official.
Refugees welcomed this campaign. They took the opportunity to ask the UNHCR to distribute hygiene materials such as soap and kitchen utensils which, according to them, are more than five years old.
The Nyarugusu camp has more than 120,000 refugees, including 49,000 Burundians, the rest being Congolese.
