Mr. Nduwimana spent the whole day being interrogated before being imprisoned.

Members of the district council from the CNDD-FDD party explain that they are victims of “harassment and intimidation”.

“They want us to change our minds on the decision taken to dismiss the office of the district council last Friday”, they denounce.

Jean Claude Nduwimana is not the only member of the Nyanza-Lac district council to have been targeted.

Evelyne Havyarimana was also summoned by the police. She is the wife of Pius Nimubona, adviser to the governor in charge of development.

The judicial police officer who heard her seized mobile phones of the two persons.

Jean Claude Nduwimana, former administrator of Nyanza-Lac from 2015 to 2020 was transferred from the district police station in Nyanza-Lac to the dungeon of the provincial police station in the morning of this Thursday.

He is the fifth CNDD-FDD member to have been detained in Nyanza-Lac since last weekend. The crisis within the ruling party in one of Burundi’s wealthiest district is far from resolved.

Local members and representatives down to the level of sections in the villages are divided on the measure of suspending the bureau of the district council and district administrator Marie Goreth Irankunda recently deposed by the district council is reluctant to leave.
