The victim is a young student who was going to graduate from high school next year. According to eyewitnesses, it was around 7 a.m. that Lahay Roy Niyera was killed.
“He was trying to clear the mud on an impassable road to facilitate vehicle traffic. He threw the mud at a soldier by mistake and the latter opened fire on him. He died on the spot”, witnesses say.
They indicate that several residents, including young CNDD-FDD members, intervened and wanted a mob justice had it not been for the intervention of other soldiers.
An official of the FDNB (Burundi National Defense Force) in charge of operations in the area indicated that the perpetrator of the crime was arrested.
“He will be judged according to the law”.
The incident created tension between soldiers and residents of Nyamitanga. Traffic was blocked for more than five hours. The situation was unblocked after the intervention of the communal administrator and military officials.
Residents demand that this soldier be tried in a flagrance trial.
