North Kivu : displaced people from Kanyarutchinya demonstrate to demand food

Dozens of displaced people confined to the Kanyaruchinya site located in the Nyiragongo territory, in North Kivu, took to the streets on Monday in the provincial capital. They demanded to be fed. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

A displaced person met on the spot specifies that he demonstrated to show his dissatisfaction on an inequality linked to the care of displaced persons.

“I have nothing left to eat. I heard that there is a donation that was distributed to displaced people of Bushagara, forgetting those of Kanyaruchinya”, he protested.

He asked the government to come to the aid of the displaced people of Kanyarutchinya.

“We are suffering here. We are struggling to hold on”, said worryingly Mr. Habyarerimana, father of three children.

Demonstrators have threatened to return to their villages despite the occupation of M23 rebels if the government does not take this issue in hand.

“We fled our villages as the harvest in our fields approached. We will not accept starvation here. If the government is unable to provide us with even food, we will return to our villages to live with the M23 instead of dying”, Patient Mugisha, displaced from Rugari in Rutshuru territory said indignantly.

It should be noted that these displaced people have fled the fighting between the M23 and the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) in their villages since last June.

In his first visit to Kinshasa last weekend, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country will “release an immediate contribution of 34 million Euros in humanitarian aid, which will be added to the amount of nearly 50 million announced by the European Union”.

Mr. Macron spoke of “European solidarity which will be materialized in the coming days with the delivery of several tons of materials for the benefit of the displaced populations in the Goma region and all the regions which have been affected by these rebel movements and these terrorist groups”.
