According to witnesses, the soldiers who kidnapped the teacher are known in the locality. They were on board a Burundian army vehicle which patrols the area every night.

“Melchior’s wife and children were beaten up by the soldiers. They had to climb the wall to kidnap him after his family tried to hide him,” neighbors say.

No reason has been communicated to the family of the teacher who also happens to be a member of the Uprona party.

Among administration and security officials, there is also radio silence.

Residents and colleagues of Melchior Ndikumana describe him as “a man who lives in harmony with everyone”.

Until now, the place of detention of this educator is not known. In recent days, several people, including civil servants, have been arrested or kidnapped in the provinces of Bubanza and Cibitoke in northwest Burundi, suspected of collaborating with Burundian rebels based in the province of South Kivu in the east of the DRC, bordering the two provinces.

Some have never been found.
