Local sources indicate that these are the remains of a woman.
The same sources speak of homicide.
The house in which the bones were found had previously been uninhabited for more than a year. Buyers of the plot realized that there were bones before alerting the administration.
Arriving, representatives of the administration, in collaboration with the police, dug up these bones.
“In the grave, there were remains of a loincloth, which makes us think of a woman who was buried there,” say eyewitnesses to the discovery of these human remains.
Family conflict
The plot belongs to Irène Kantungeko. Her husband, Zacharie Nintunze, wanted the plot to be sold. In 2022, the man was arrested and jailed before being released. At the time, Zacharie had assaulted his wife.
“Irene had said goodbye. She wanted to go and work abroad,” said neighbors before indicating that they thought her husband had moved to his native town. He is not from Rumonge. He settled in this province of southwestern Burundi from the district and province of Gitega (central Burundi).
The local administration confirms the information.
So far, no trace of the two spouses.
Local police say they have apprehended one person as part of an ongoing investigation. This is Irene’s sister who had been caring for her child for more than a year, without however informing anyone of her sister’s new address.
Local residents are demanding independent investigations and a fair trial in this case.
