Bubanza: consumers of Brarudi products denounce the administration’s inaction in the face of speculation

At a time when drinks from the Brasserie et lemonaderies du Burundi (Brarudi) remain rare in the Bubanza province (western Burundi), consumers accuse the governor of not controlling prices. The regional authority simply asks those who complain to stop disturbing him and rather reduce the quantity of drinks they usually consume.

A 65 cl Amstel bottle went from 3,500 Burundian francs to 7,000 or even 8,000 francs, according to consumers.

“Today Amstel 65cl sells for between 6,000 and 8,000 francs, while the official price is only 3,500 francs,” laments a consumer of this product met in the capital of the Bubanza province.

Other products such as Primus and lemonades have suffered a price increase which worries residents while the municipal administration is involved in distribution.

During the celebration of the 62nd anniversary of Burundi’s independence, the governor of Bubanza province did not condemn the speculators.

The governor, on the other hand, complained about people who called him to tell him that Brarudi drinks are rare and are becoming too expensive.

“I ask you to reduce your consumption. If you are used to taking three bottles a day, take just one and go home,” said Cleophas Nizigiyimana.

And to threaten women.

“And you women, after 6 p.m., you should be at home, and not in bistros.”
