Day dedicated to the Imbonerakure: one dead and 10 injured in a road accident in Makamba

A leader of the Imbonerakure in the Gitara zone in Makamba commune and province (southern Burundi) died in a road accident on road number 3 in the locality of Rimbo in Nyanza-Lac commune in the same province. A police source specifies that ten other Imbonerakure were seriously injured and that the accident was linked to speeding.

These members of the youth league of the presidential party had just participated in a ceremony held in Bujumbura as part of a day dedicated to the Imbonerakure.

They had gone there in a caravan of Fuso trucks that usually transport goods and construction materials.

“They were crammed into Fuso trucks like goods in the morning to go to Bujumbura for these ceremonies. It is not surprising that such an accident happened. The driver and some Imbonerakure were arguing. A situation made worse by the fact that they had all drunk too much. The worst happened then,” testified a survivor who spoke to SOS Médias Burundi on condition of anonymity.

This information is confirmed by a police source who indicates that the accident was due to excessive speed and poor road conditions.

The victims’ families, in shock, are demanding compensation. Especially since, according to them, this vehicle was not insured for the transport of people.
