Bujumbura Round Table: just a few promises

The small East African nation held a round table from December 5 to 6 in the Burundi’s financial capital Bujumbura. After the presentation of needs by members of the government, a number of development partners promised support to Burundi.

We can particularly mention the area of ​​public infrastructure where the Burundian minister in charge presented a project for the construction of villages. Dieudonné Dukundane also indicated he needed over a billion dollars for the construction of roads of more than 1500 km in the future.

In the area of ​​energy, only 26% of the Burundian population has electricity, revealed Burundian officials who want more investors in this area.

The ministers in charge of health and agriculture, for their part, mentioned the lack of experts and specialists as the main challenge that handicaps the two sectors.

As a result, the AfDB (African Development Bank) has promised $700 million in support for road construction, development of the energy and mining sectors in particular.

The European Union has made promises but in all African countries. It has promised to double the funds granted to African countries since 2021 in four years.

Some UN agencies have also committed to supporting the electricity sector in Burundi.

More than 170 countries attended this round table of investors who will help Burundi “achieve” its vision – emerging country in 2040 and developed in 2060.

None of them wanted to get involved in the tourism sector.

In the meantime, the Burundi Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding with the African Chamber of Commerce and Services of Morocco for a collaboration to encourage Moroccan investors to bring their investiment to Burundi.
