Burundi : is Gitega province an open-air “cemetery”?

The gruesome discovery of Nestor Niyongabo’s body on Monday, March 17, in Kigara village, in Nyarusange district, adds to an alarming series of murders in Gitega province in central Burundi. Since November 2024, more than 30 bodies have been found there, according to a count by SOS Médias Burundi.

This is a new crime that is worrying the local population.

Nestor Niyongabo, 57 years old, was discovered dead about 100 meters from his home, near the Free Methodist Church. According to a witness, his body had numerous head injuries and significant blood flow from his ears and nose, suggesting a violent attack with clubs.

Kigara village chief Charles Ntahomvukiye confirmed the information, suggesting that the murder could be linked to a land dispute, as the victim was in legal dispute with relatives.

Three suspects arrested

As part of the investigation, the police arrested three people : Thomas Barekebavuge and his son Alexis Nshimirimana, at whose home meat purchased by the victim was allegedly found, and Jean Marie Nkunzimana, who was reportedly seen in the company of Nestor Niyongabo before his death. The suspects are currently held in police cells in Nyarusange.
