INFO SOS Médias Burundi

He is a Burundian refugee who transports goods and people on his motorcycle. While he was parking at a place commonly known as “Burundi Market” on Thursday, three young South Sudanese men asked him to take them to the urban center of Turkana, located not far from Kakuma. As this is his job, he didn’t hesitate, as his colleagues testify.

“As soon as he crossed a bridge that connects Turkana Center and Kakuma, these passengers pulled out machetes and knives hidden in their pants and jackets. They forced him to stop and leave his motorcycle. When he tried to resist, they seriously injured his neck and arms,” sources on the scene reported.

He was left there, dying, and was rescued by passersby who took him to the central hospital called “Clinic Seven,” where he is receiving intensive care.

His colleagues are concerned about the crime that has become rampant in this camp and are calling on the police to redouble their vigilance.

In this specific case, they are demanding that the police conduct an investigation to locate the motorcycle and the perpetrators of this attack so that they are punished in an exemplary manner.

Asked about this case, a local police official indicated that investigations were underway : “We have received information about this attack and have already deployed a team to find the perpetrators. We ask residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”

For his part, a UNHCR representative in Kakuma expressed his outrage at the growing insecurity : “Refugees must be able to carry out their activities in complete safety. We call on the authorities to take concrete measures to prevent such incidents.”

Kakuma is home to more than 200,000 refugees, including more than 25,000 Burundians.
