Kakuma, August 20, 2025 – The suspicious death of a Sudanese refugee in the Kakuma camp in Kenya has sparked outrage. The gruesome discovery took place on Tuesday, August 19, when his body was found at his home.
The tragedy occurred in the Kakuma IV area. The victim, who was in his thirties, was found by his neighbors who saw blood seeping from under the door of his house.
“He was lying on his stomach, his throat slit, with wounds on his neck. A knife that the executioners allegedly used was next to his body,” neighbors said.
Initial police investigations suggest a settling of scores, as the victim was a well-known merchant in the area.
“The suspect is believed to be one of his former employees, and also his compatriot whom the victim had imprisoned for stealing money. The suspect had vowed revenge after his release,” the police said, adding that the alleged criminal had just been released last week after more than a year in detention.
The police are pursuing this suspect, who is believed to have fled to his country of origin.
The victim’s neighbors are outraged by this tragedy and are demanding justice, including through diplomatic channels.
Kakuma camp is home to more than 250,000 refugees, including more than 25,000 Burundians.
