Mugina : a mother and daughter seriously injured with a machete by fleeing Imbonerakure

SOS Médias Burundi,

Mugina, September 10, 2025 – A violent machete attack left two women seriously injured on Tuesday, September 9, in Bubondo village, in Mugina district, Bujumbura province, in western Burundi. Immaculée Mukeshimana, 65 years old, and her daughter Calinie Nzokira, 22 years old, were attacked by Imbonerakure (members of the youth league of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling party), before they fled.

According to residents of Bubondo, the family had gone to a one-hectare field recently reclaimed during a land division. For several days, they had been receiving death threats. These threats resulted in a brutal attack.

Alerted by the screams, local residents evacuated the victims to a medical facility. “Their state of health is very worrying,” medical sources said.

Suspects on the run

The alleged attackers were identified by the local population as Ntakiruta, alias Kayuki, and Mani, alias Gikoko. These two youths, described as Imbonerakure from the locality, fled immediately after the attack. A police investigation is underway to locate them.

A persistent climate of land tension

Land conflicts regularly cause bloodshed in the region. In three months, two women and a man have already lost their lives in the same village under similar circumstances. The population is expressing its anger and demanding justice. “Light is needed on this case and perpetrators should need to be arrested,” insisted a relative of the victims.

Authorities call for calm

Contacted by the press, Mugina’s district administrator, Anicet Saidi, confirmed the facts and called for calm. “We ask the families not to take justice into their own hands and to await the results of the investigation,” he declared.
