More than 5,400 cases of aggravated theft recorded during the past judicial year, according to Attorney General Léonard Manirakiza

Bujumbura, September 28, 2025 – During the judicial session on September 26, 2025, held at the Kigobe Chamber of the Bujumbura city, the Attorney General of the Republic, Léonard Manirakiza, presented a worrying report on the offenses handled during the past judicial year.

Among the most alarming figures, 5,451 cases of aggravated theft were recorded by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. These incidents dominate judicial statistics, without the underlying causes driving some to commit these acts being clearly identified.

In addition to thefts, the prosecutor’s office also handled :

2,505 cases of assault and battery,

1,134 cases of traffic accidents,

633 fraud cases,

443 cases of forgery and use of forged documents,

415 rape cases,

271 cases of domestic violence,

212 cases of rebellion,

169 cases of malicious destruction of fields,

109 cases of illicit human trafficking,

and 78 cases of breach of trust.

The Attorney General emphasized that for the 2025-2026 judicial year, one of the priorities will be to analyze the underlying causes of these offenses in order to develop more effective prevention strategies.
