Local alcohol : a silent bomb weakening Burundi’s youth

Local alcohol : a silent bomb weakening Burundi’s youth

SOS Médias Burundi

Bujumbura, May 28, 2026 – The proliferation of cheap, high-alcohol beverages is increasingly becoming a major public health concern in Burundi, particularly among young people. In several neighborhoods of Bujumbura, as well as in various provinces across the country, these artisanal or semi-industrial drinks are gaining ground, driven by their low cost and high alcohol content.

According to vendors interviewed in the Kamenge and Kinama markets, in the north of the commercial capital Bujumbura, various types of locally produced, high-alcohol liquors and fortified wines are enjoying high consumption, especially among young people. Their main advantage remains their affordability, significantly lower than the price of industrially produced beverages from Brarudi, the country’s sole brewery.

From morning till night, the scenes are repeated in several bars : customers spend long hours consuming these alcoholic drinks sold in small bottles. In some working-class neighborhoods of the commercial capital, people in a state of advanced intoxication are visible from the early hours of the morning. Others, unable to stand, collapse after consuming their “dose.”

The high alcohol concentration in some of these products is particularly worrying to specialists. Some bottles of less than 30 centiliters reportedly contain alcohol levels of up to 40 percent, causing rapid, intense, and sometimes dangerous effects in consumers.

Expanding consumption and worrying social trends

In markets and working-class neighborhoods, these drinks have become ubiquitous, circulating widely through informal channels. Their consumption now affects different social strata, with a strong presence among young people, but also among some adults without stable employment.

The phenomenon goes beyond mere health concerns and is gradually extending into social realities. The observed or reported consequences are numerous : decreased productivity, school dropouts, family breakdown, domestic violence, and an increase in risky behaviors. In some cases, local authorities describe extreme situations, including the complete severance of family ties.

The case of Bujumbura is not isolated. In several regions of this small East African nation, the proliferation of locally produced, strong alcoholic beverages continues to cause serious concern. Terrible situations are regularly reported, ranging from mothers who abandon breastfeeding due to alcoholism, to young people and men who turn to banditry, and even to domestic violence, sometimes fatal, leading to murders or the disintegration of families.

Serious and lasting health consequences

According to several health sector observers, excessive consumption of these beverages can lead to serious consequences : alcohol addiction, liver disease, mental disorders, violent behavior, accidents, decreased academic and professional performance, and increased poverty within households.

The danger is exacerbated by the production conditions of some of these drinks, often manufactured without strict hygiene controls or compliance with health standards. This lack of sufficient regulation increases the risks for consumers.

The visible effects in some regular consumers are alarming : deterioration of physical condition, swollen faces, skin disorders, swollen legs, and other marked physical alterations. This phenomenon, once predominantly affecting men, now also impacts women and young people.

Still limited responses to a growing phenomenon

Faced with this situation, several local authorities have already carried out seizures and targeted bans on certain beverages deemed dangerous to public health.

National authorities are also increasing their warnings and calling on administrative officials to strengthen vigilance, considering the proliferation of these products as a serious threat to public health and social stability.

The Burundi Bureau of Standards and Quality Control (BBN) has been tasked with strengthening controls on manufacturers and distributors. However, its director general acknowledges the difficulties encountered in this mission, citing in particular cases of non-compliance with standards and the existence of pressure exerted on certain actors in the sector.

In some localities, raids have been carried out on shops to remove these products from the market, accompanied by ultimatums issued to the retailers. The retailers, for their part, sometimes refuse these measures, claiming to have obtained their supplies through channels they consider legal.

A national challenge with multiple implications

The phenomenon is not limited to the commercial capital. It is gradually spreading to several provinces of the country, where the consumption of these local alcoholic beverages continues to increase, fueling growing concern among health and administrative authorities.

As the consumption of these drinks continues to grow, many are calling for stronger and more coordinated measures to strictly regulate the production, distribution, and sale of locally produced alcoholic beverages, with the aim of protecting public health and preserving social cohesion.
