Kayanza: four mineworkers dead in a landslide in Kivuvu
The incident occurred in the afternoon of Monday, September 18. A strip of earth slipped and blocked a hole where four miners were searching coltan. It is on Kivuvu hill in Kabarore commune, Kayanza province (northern Burundi). The communal administration confirms the information and regrets the victims were not insured. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
The four victims were surprised by the slide while they were inside the hole, our sources say.
“They are four men, all employees of a mineral extraction cooperative. Yesterday they searching Coltan. Unfortunately, a landslide blocked the hole they were in and they were asphyxiated. We could do nothing to save them”, local sources told SOS Médias Burundi this Tuesday.
At the beginning of the evening, the bodies of the victims were able to be extricated from the hole. They were evacuated to the morgue.
The victims’ families regret that theirs were not insured.
The administration’s side indicates that it wants to organize awareness meetings for mineral extraction cooperatives to invite them to insure their employees.
